Performing Packet Error Rate Tests
The Packet Error Rate Test (PERT) generates traffic to the
network and measures frame loss and frame error rate. The test
can be performed between two FrameScope Pro units or
between one FrameScope Pro and a loopback device. The
supported test directions are downstream, upstream, sequential
(when the test port is half duplex), or bidirectional (when the
test port is full duplex).
Packets that are received by the receiving side are analyzed for
checksum errors and losses. PERT captures errors in all
segments of the Ethernet frame, including both the header and
payload. PERT can also analyze the network response to the
errors by injecting the errors into the network. The configurable
parameters for the test are as listed below.
• Target (another FrameScope Pro, or a loopback device)
• Frame length in bytes (64 bytes to 16000 bytes)
• Frame rate
• Utilization percentage of the port speed
• Test duration in hours:minutes, or continuous
• Timeout
• Test direction
• Data pattern (choice of six preconfigured and custom
patterns)
The maximum test duration for PERT is typically 24 hours, but
may be up to 99 hours.
